The 1 Hour Fall Deep Clean I Always Start With

Because sometimes, one focused hour is all it takes to shift the entire energy of your home.

Why I Always Start With This Fall Deep Clean

That first cool breeze hits, the sun shifts, and suddenly I find myself craving warmth, softness, and structure again. But when my home still feels like summer chaos, cluttered, dusty, and out of sync, it’s hard to feel grounded.

That’s why every fall, before I light the first candle or bring out any cozy throws, I do this:
a one-hour deep clean that resets my entire home.

This whole reset is about shifting the feel of the space, so my nervous system exhales and my home starts to match the season I’m entering.

⏱️ The 1-Hour Fall Deep Clean Routine

I set a timer. I keep it simple. And I always follow this order:

1. Living Area: Clear + Wipe (10-15 min)

  • Remove anything left behind (summer toys, flip-flops, clutter)
  • Wipe down every surface! No decor yet, just clean slates
  • Vacuum or sweep with intention (move the couch if you can)

Why it matters: It instantly shifts the energy. This is the room I see first thing in the morning, so making it feel clear sets the tone.

2. Entryway or Front Step Reset (5-10 min)

  • Sweep or shake off rugs
  • Wipe down the door and surrounding walls
  • Remove sandals/summer gear and replace with baskets or bins
  • Add one fall touch (a dried wreath, a boot tray, a cozy mat)

Why it matters: This is the transition point between the outside world and my inner calm. It deserves attention.

3. Bathroom Deep Quick Clean (5 min)

  • Wipe down mirror, sink, and toilet
  • Clear surfaces (goodbye half-used summer sunscreens)
  • Add a cozy towel or candle for fall warmth

Why it matters: I always forget how much a clean bathroom affects my mood, until it’s sparkling.

4. Kitchen Cleanout (20 min)

  • Wipe down all surfaces + cupboard fronts
  • Declutter counters (even one thing gone helps)
  • Sweep or mop quickly
  • Do a 5-minute fridge check: toss old food, wipe one shelf

Why it matters: The kitchen runs the rhythm of the home and I want mine to feel fresh, not stale.

5. Add Cozy Fall Layers With What You Already Have (5–10 min)

  • Pull out all your cozy textures — chunky throws, woven baskets, soft pillows, knit anything
  • Swap out any summery tones for warmer, earthier ones: rust, oat, pine, golden mustard
  • Drape a throw over your couch, tuck a candle into a tray, stack a few cozy books
  • Place one fall-specific item in each space: a mini pumpkin, a cinnamon stick bundle, a jar of dried leaves or florals

Why it matters: You don’t need to buy fall decor to feel the shift. Just layering warmth and grounding tones can bring in that crisp, cozy autumn energy.

6. Create a Fall Feeling Corner (5 min)

  • Choose one small space: a windowsill, coffee table, or nightstand
  • Add a candle (think: spiced clove, cedar, apple, or smoky vanilla)
  • Layer in natural textures: acorns, branches, dried orange slices, pinecones
  • Place a mug nearby or a little stack of cozy reads

Why it matters: This becomes your “autumn anchor.” A reminder to slow down. A physical cue that the season has changed and so have your rhythms.

7. Let the Season Set the Mood (1 min)

  • Dim the lights or turn on a warm lamp
  • Light your fall candle
  • Open a window, even for a second and let the autumn air move through
  • Ask yourself: Does this space feel like fall to me?

Why it matters: This reset is about decorating to feel. If your space smells like cinnamon, glows a little softer, and invites you to sit down, you’ve captured the season.

Why A Fall Home Deep Clean Works

I’ve done this every September for a few years now, and here’s what I’ve learned:
How much you clean, doesn’t make your home feel more on season. It’s what kind of clean brings peace back into your body and space.

You don’t need new decor. You don’t need perfection. You just need a few areas to feel intentionally reset, and suddenly everything feels more doable.
