How I Decorated My Home When I Had No Money (But Still Wanted It to Feel Like Home)
We were broke. Like really broke. No money for curtains, no budget for décor, not even an extra $20 for a throw pillow. And yet… I still wanted our home to feel good. Safe. Calming. Ours.
And not just for me but for my kids, too.
So I started looking at what I could do. Not to impress anyone or make my house Instagram-worthy, but to create a space that felt peaceful, even in survival mode. Somewhere that made my family feel happy, where the decor that surrounded us felt like home.
Here’s how I decorated my home when I had no money, and how you can, too.

1. Rearranged the Room (And It Changed Everything)
Sometimes the most powerful change is free. I spent an afternoon moving furniture and suddenly, my whole living room felt brand new. I truly thought there just wasn’t another way to make my furniture “work” in my living room but I was so wrong!
Try this:
- Swap chairs or side tables between rooms
- Angle your couch differently or pull it away from the wall
- Move a lamp or rug to a new space
It costs nothing, but it gives your brain the refresh it’s craving.
If your space still feels flat, try adding a warm-glow table lamp like this one, it instantly softens the room and makes everything feel cozier without spending very much or having to bring in decor. It’s a cordless touch lamp, and it’s become a staple on my living room shelf.
2. Made a “Use What You Have” Décor Stash
I walked around my house with a laundry basket and collected:
- Pretty jars I’d shoved in the cupboard
- A scarf I no longer wore but loved the pattern of
- A ceramic bowl from under the sink
- My kids’ artwork
- A tea towel with a quote I loved
When I laid it all out, I realized… I already had beautiful things. I’d just never used them like they mattered. Then the fun begins, finding new ways to display them and make them fit into new parts of your home.
If you need a few inexpensive basics to tie it all together, these soft-glow amber glass flameless candles are one of my favorite cozy tricks. No mess, no fire risk, and they look stunning tucked inside jars or on shelves. They’re rechargeable, so you can keep the warm light going night after night without ever replacing batteries. I use them everywhere, in my kitchen window, on the dresser, even in the bathroom for calm evening light. It’s that instant cozy magic that costs almost nothing to keep.

3. Deep Cleaned + Decluttered
This sounds boring, but hear me out:
When you’re broke, a clean space feels expensive. Read that again!
I wiped the baseboards. Decluttered the shelves and drawers that made me feel heavy. Scrubbed the mirror until it sparkled. It made the room feel new. Like literally brand new. And the clutter I cleared made space for more feeling, less overwhelm.
Clean + spacious = instant “fresh start” energy.
Once I’ve finished decluttering, I always spray my tried and true natural cedar fabric spray over the couch, the curtains, even the entryway rug. It’s that tiny finishing touch that makes the whole space smell clean, cozy, grounded, and fresh again. There’s something about the warm cedar scent that feels like a deep breath after the chaos.
4. Created Cozy Corners With What I Had
One blanket, one candle, one chair.
That was all I used to make a reading nook in the corner of my bedroom that I now use every single day. I didn’t buy a thing, just gave that little space a purpose that I knew I would get use out of.
Ask yourself: What would make me feel held in this room?
Then pull those items together in one tiny spot.
This family favorite blanket is my version of comfort in a tangible form. It’s soft, textured, and somehow makes every chair feel like a little retreat. I drape it over the arm of my reading chair, and it instantly adds warmth, not just visually, but emotionally. If you’re creating your own cozy corner, this is the one I’d reach for first. It’s under $25, washes beautifully, comes in a ton of colors and makes your whole space feel layered and lived-in. You can find it here on Amazon.
5. Brought Nature Inside
Branches in a vase, wildflowers in a jar, pinecones in a bowl, a single sprig of cedar by the sink.
Nature decor is free and beautiful. It makes your home smell good, look thoughtful, and feel connected to something bigger than the mess or money stress. Its truly one of my absolute favorite under rated ways to decorate on a budget.
Walk outside. Bring something in.

6. Made Free Art That Mattered to Me
No printer? No problem.
Here’s what I did:
- Wrote my favorite quote on a piece of brown paper
- Let my toddler finger-paint a “canvas” for the entryway
- Made a collage with magazine scraps and Mod Podge
Want something pre-made? Pinterest is full of free printables: affirmations, botanical art, minimalist sketches. Just print at the library, staples if you are ok spending a dollar or two, or ask a friend.
7. Focused on Feeling, Not Pinterest
This was the hardest part.
I had to stop thinking “What would look good?” and start asking: “What would feel good?”
And sometimes that meant putting a blanket basket by the door, or putting my slippers under the couch so they were waiting.
Or having our favorite cozy star shaped fairy lights up in July because they made the kids smile.
Beauty Doesn’t Have to Cost Money
Your home doesn’t need more money, it needs more meaning. There is no better decor than that.
It needs to reflect you, your current season, your softness and your strength. If all you have right now is a tired heart and a hopeful mind, that’s enough to start.
Decorate with care. With intention. With love. Even when money is tight…Especially when money is tight.
This is about creating a home that holds you just as you are, and you don’t need to impress anyone to do that!
With Love,
Jenn
