The Secret Way I Declutter for Fall (Without Getting Overwhelmed)
Because sometimes the mess isn’t the real problem, it’s the pressure behind it.

🍂 Why I Declutter Before Fall Fully Hits
Every year, like clockwork, fall stirs something in me.
It’s not just the cooler air or the pumpkin muffins, it’s this quiet urge to make space…to clear out the noise. To come back home. To my home.
But for a long time, “decluttering” meant chaos. Piles. Guilt. Overwhelm. Half-finished baskets on the floor.
Until I realized: I was doing it wrong.
Instead of tackling the whole house, I realized I just needed a better entry point. A way to ease into fall with less clutter and more calm.
The Secret? I Declutter by Category + Season Not by Room
Instead of trying to declutter the kitchen, then the bathroom, then the kids’ closet…
I do one tiny seasonal category at a time.
It takes the pressure off. It keeps me focused. And most importantly, it actually gets done.
🍁 My Fall Declutter Categories (The Real-Life Version)
These are the exact categories I go through every fall. No giant overhaul, just practical shifts that bring more space and more breath into our home.
1. Entryway Gear (10–15 min)
- Summer hats, sandals, sunglasses: stored away or donated
- Wipe down the door, swap out the mat, clear the shoe pile
- Add a basket for fall boots or cozy socks
Why it works: Fall starts here. Making it functional = whole-home energy shift.
2. Fall Clothes (15–20 min)
- Pull out sweaters and cozy layers (only the ones I actually wear)
- Donate anything scratchy, stretched, or unloved
- Store summer clothes in a bin or bag, they don’t need to take up space anymore
Why it works: When the weather turns, I don’t have to dig. Everything I need is already where it belongs.
3. Mugs + Seasonal Kitchenware (10 min)
- Let go of chipped mugs or ones I never reach for
- Wipe down the shelf, make room for my coziest fall favorites
- Bring any seasonal items up front in cabinets/shelves
- Add one little touch: a tea tin, a wooden spoon, a spice jar
Why it works: It’s the most comforting, doable place to start and sets the tone for cozy season.
4. Kid Stuff (One Bin Only) (15 min)
- Choose one bin, one drawer, or one small toy shelf
- Declutter summer toys or broken bits
- Make space for quiet, cozy play: puzzles, books, warm-toned toys
Why it works: I don’t have to overhaul the playroom, just reset the rhythm.
5. The “Invisible” Clutter (10–15 min)
- Expired candles, tangled cords, crusty pens, old mail
- Toss one drawer’s worth of clutter, wipe it down, light a fall candle
- Quickly clear out an overflowing cabinet in the kitchen that you’ve been meaning to tackle
Why it works: It’s not just visual. When these little piles are gone, I can breathe again.

The Mindset Shift That Changed Everything
I stopped trying to declutter for the house.
Now I declutter for me.
I stopped trying to impress anyone or trying to make my home magazine-worthy. I realized that I deserve a space that doesn’t overstimulate me every time I walk through it.
Fall is the perfect time to let things go.
To say goodbye to the stuff that clutters not just our homes, but our thoughts.
What I Remind Myself Each Time:
- You don’t have to finish everything today.
- You don’t need to declutter perfectly.
- You just need to start.
