10 Foods I Always Have Prepped So I Never Cave to Takeout (Even on Bad Days)
There’s a certain kind of tired where even the thought of boiling pasta feels like too much.
And that’s usually when the food guilt starts creeping in, because you’re hungry, too tired to cook, and takeout feels like the only option. Not because you want to spend the money, but because your body just needs one less decision.
I’ve been there more times than I can count. And what finally helped wasn’t a perfect meal plan (because trust me I’ve tried many), it was prepping a small rotation of foods that gave me a head start on the hard days.
These aren’t fancy or time-consuming. they’re just real-life lifesavers I keep in my fridge or freezer so that when the overwhelm hits, I don’t spiral into spending.
1. Cooked Chicken (Shredded or Baked)
This is probably my biggest takeout-blocker. I’ll cook a batch of chicken breasts or thighs with simple seasoning and keep them ready to throw into:
- wraps
- quesadillas
- soups
- sandwiches
- rice bowls
It’s a tiny prep that turns “I have nothing to eat” into “oh, I can throw something together.” Even just buying a pre made roast chicken makes all the difference if you don’t have the time to cook.
2. Cooked Rice or Quinoa
I batch-cook a few cups and store them in glass containers. Having rice ready means I can build:
- stir fries
- taco bowls
- leftover fridge bowls
- quick curries
I’ll often mix it with frozen peas my pre made chicken and tamari for a 3-minute comfort meal.

3. Hard-Boiled Eggs
Easy protein. If my energy is gone, I’ll slice one over toast or a salad, or just eat them with salt and pepper. Also helpful for snacky lunches when nothing sounds good.
4. Roasted Veggies
I try to roast a tray of whatever I have on hand: carrots, sweet potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, onions. They reheat well, go in bowls, wraps, or next to scrambled eggs. Having them already cooked makes everything easier.
5. Grated Cheese
This seems silly, but I promise it’s a game-changer. I buy blocks of cheese and grate them all at once. That way:
- quesadillas are ready in 5 minutes
- scrambled eggs taste better
- pasta or baked rice feels more “finished”
It also helps the kids make their own snacks without asking me every time. It takes ONE EXTRA STEP out of having to prepare something, and it makes all the difference.
6. Open-Faced Bean Mix
Once a week I’ll mash a can of black beans or chickpeas with some olive oil, garlic, lemon, or whatever seasoning I have. I keep it in a jar in the fridge for:
- toast
- burrito bowls with prepped chicken or rice
- wraps
- a quick protein-rich spoonful when I don’t want to cook
7. Freezer Pancakes or Muffins
These literally save my life with kids nearly every day. I double up on batches and freeze them flat. Then when I’m tempted to buy breakfast or snacks out, I just toast a few and serve with fruit or nut butter. Saves us so much money.

8. Cut Veggies in Water
I keep sticks of carrots, cucumbers, and celery in water in the fridge. They last longer and make snack plates way faster when we’re all melting down before dinner is ready.
9. Frozen Sauce Cubes (Tomato or Pesto)
If I make a batch of pasta sauce or pesto, I freeze some in an ice cube tray. That way I don’t have to start from scratch when I’m running low, I just throw a few cubes into hot pasta and call it dinner.
10. Soup or Chili Portions
I try to keep one or two single-serve jars of soup or chili in the freezer. It’s like homemade takeout. If I’m home alone or totally done with cooking, I can heat one up and still feel like I cared for myself.

Meal Prepping Can Be Over Rated
Sometimes, simplicity is better. I’ve found that instead of having it all together when it comes to food, it’s just not realistic. It’s about having just enough in place so that when the exhaustion hits, or the day goes sideways, you still feel supported.
These prepped foods have helped me avoid so many impulse takeout nights, and helped my family save a little bit more money each month.
Start with 2 or 3 and keep it simple. These little comforts add up in big ways.
